Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
